Position Summary

The Nursery Manager is a skilled professional with a background in horticulture or the garden center industry. Their primary responsibility is maintaining all plant material's health, care, and appearance within the nursery and on project sites. The position involves managing the watering schedule and keeping track of all inventory for clients and wholesale. This position requires interacting with customers and team members, so excellent communication skills are necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Inspect all plant materials inside to ensure they meet Highridge standards.

  • Provide input for future herbaceous crops, working closely with the herbaceous plant buyer.

  • Direct and train the property care staff, enabling them to accomplish tasks in accordance with Highridge quality standards.

  • Oversee pulling and staging of herbaceous orders.

  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of nursery, greenhouse, and herbaceous staging areas.

  • Purchase all nursery supplies, including fertilizer, chemicals, and equipment.

  • Receive deliveries and put the received products in the appropriate location.

  • Participate in offsite trips to locate appropriate and needed herbaceous plant material as needed.

  • Oversee and participate in the loading and unloading of herbaceous plant materials.

  • Record all plants received, moved, sized, or discarded on the daily log sheet.

  • Diagnose plant problems on site.

  • Follow the purchasing process (i.e., using agreements, dissemination of information to departments and production, etc.).

  • Maintain an accurate database of available herbaceous plant material located in the nursery.

  • Assist in creating a production calendar.

  • Experience with equipment, skid loaders, and mini skid loaders.

  • Participate in vendor trips to locate appropriate and needed herbaceous plant material.

  • Identify new vendors for future purchases.

  • Communicate any status or internal issues and concerns to the Owner, Project Manager, and Account Manager in a timely manner.

  • Approve material invoices in a timely manner.

  • Works independently and within a team on special, nonrecurring, and ongoing projects.

  • Consistently evaluates work and determine if further steps are needed to meet internal and external client expectations.

  • Participate in weekly departmental and training meetings.

  • Follow company policies, procedures, and work standards.

  • Arrive for each work day on time and prepared.

  • Maintains effective documentation for all greenhouse procedures.

  • Recommend process improvements and areas to improve our service offerings to clients.

Field of Major Study (Preferably): Horticulture

  • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture or other relevant field is required.

  • At least 2-5 years of nursery/horticulture experience required.

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of growing techniques and plant materials.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

  • Ability to lead others and train and develop staff for career development.

  • Ability to work in a team environment, including taking direction and constructive feedback from team members and providing feedback to other team members.

  • Minimize non-productive time and fill slow periods with activities that will enable you to prepare to meet the future needs of internal and external clients.

  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills consistently with Highridge associates and vendors.

  • Ability to deliver quality results under tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of general computer functions and Microsoft Office programs.

Working Conditions

This role requires intermittent physical activity, including standing, reaching, walking, and sitting. There may be periodic travel both in and out of state to various nurseries and vendor locations. Evening and weekend work may be required to meet client needs and deadlines.

Requirements: Valid Driver's License that is not currently suspended or revoked (driving record must meet the insurance carrier's policy requirements and Highridge Landscapes driving standard).
